Follis.Jordyn.Abstract.

The purpose of this paper is to inform the readers about Leukemia and how it affects the fighter and the fighters family. Leukemia is a type of blood cancer that begins in the bone marrow. White blood cells (known as leukocytes) are used by the body to fight infections and other foreign substances. This paper is going to include both a cause and effect, and a narrative point of stand. A cause and effect will be displayed by educating the readers how leukemia forms in the body and the effect it has on the patient and family. The narrative part of this paper will include sharing the story about my cousin, Hannah, who is currently battling this disease. I will share how she was diagnosed with Leukemia, what kind of treatment she went through, how the treatment effects Hannah. Interview subjects will be my uncle, the father of my 7 year old cousin who is currently battling leukemia. He will be questioned about my cousin specifically. What kind of leukemia was she diagnosed with? What was her chances of winning the battle? He will also be questioned about the effect that the whole situation has had on him, hannah, her siblings, and other relatives. From the interview, the readers will get informed from a more narrative not just a research point of view.

Research Paper RD Proposal

For my research paper I want to go more in dept about cancer and how it affect the fighter and the fighters families. This was my Ted talk topic and I want to go more in depth about it. I want to start with talking about what cancer is and the different types and go into the different types. And then talk more specifically about leukemia. I want to do my essay a narrative but also a cause and effect. The cause of cancer and then the effect cancer has on the patient and all the family members of the fighter. For this paper I am thinking about interviewing my uncle, he could tell me a lot of details about how Hannah's daily life has changed dramatically and what she has to do every day from the start of her treatment, to the end, and for the test of her life. He will also tell me more on how it effects the family as well. I recently talked to my uncle and asked him about how Hannah was doing and I also asked him how Nick and Ella were doing (Hannah's siblings). And he told me how much it has affected them too as a person. It has changed how they see life. It has effected my uncle and aunt dramatically as parents I know that. They have had their hardships since the Hannah was diagnosed, and they have to do what's best for Hannah not exactly for them. Their first thought is how will this effect Hannah and is this a good choice? I want to show throughtout my essay not only the effect on cancer patients but also the effect on family members.

Heart of Darkness Thesis

In my essay I want to talk and show the readers how Conrad displays darkness thoughout the book. Throughout my paper I want to answer my thesis which is, How does Conrad display the darkness contemporary features to the readers throughout the book Heart of Darkness? The first quote I would use to show the darkness that is displayed by the river is  “Going up the river was like traveling back to the earliest beginnings of the world” (105). I would explain by saying how in the start of the book the only darkness that was identified was slavery. As Marlow goes up stream, more darkness is displayed, for example the sickness that the people conjure that Kurtz have. The second quote I would use would be “He allowed his 'boy' -- an overfed young negro from the coast -- to treat the white men, under his very eyes, with provoking insolence." (90) I would go into this saying the evil shown here is how Conrad displays the readers to look at the African Americans as animals. The last quote I would use to display to the readers how Conrad signified darkness through out his novel is “The offing was barred by a black bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed sombre under an overcast sky - it seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness.” (164) This quote shows the darkness through the weather that is displayed throughtout the book.

Follis.Jordyn.HeartofDarkness.

In Heart of Darkness, the author Jospeh Conrad, displays to the readers how low the black African Americans are in the capitalist system. "He allowed his 'boy' -- an overfed young negro from the coast -- to treat the white men, under his very eyes, with provoking insolence." (90) Through this quote, the readers get opened up too the situation about how animalish the black African Americans are looked at by the society through the Conrad's thoughts and opinions. In the book the readers were introduced to the manager. The manager is a powerful man who all the guys have to listen too. The manager gets to own his own slave. This quote demonstrates exactly how the slaves are the domination of another person higher up in the socialist order. The words Conrad uses his story "his 'boy'..." Reference how the black African American is the managers property. Back then when slavery was a issue, slaves were peoples property. Slaves weren't just original people they were owned by the richer people. The dominant class could treat them however they wanted to. When owning a animal, you get to choose how they are treated, for example if you feed them or not. Animals are known to be overfed when it is about the time for being bouchered. The quote displays to the viewers how the manager can order the slaves around like a animal with rude behavior or speech. It also demonstrates how the slave is being referenced to be a animal by being overfed. Throughout the book Heart of Darkness, Joseph portrays the black African Americans to be weak to the rest of the society and to be apart of the lower social class.

3StoryGenderLens

Throughout the short stories Agatha McGee and the St. Isidore Seven, Nancy Clancy's Nephew, and Rufus at the Door, looking through the gender lens Jon Hassler displays the female characters to be masculine and hold power over the male characters. Hassler would let us meet a dynamic character who starts out to be a stereotypical female who contains all the roles of a female and them changes into a bold aggressive masculine character. In Agatha McGee and the St. Isidore Seven the character is Agatha McGee. Throughout the short story Nancy Clancy's Nephew, George's Aunt Nancy Clancy shows masculine traits and in Rufus at the Door, Rufus's mom arrays being the masculine character in their household.

Follis.Jordyn.Revise

Throughout the short story Winning Sarah Spooner, the characteristics of stereotypical male and females are exhibited. From the beginning of the story, Sarah Spooner is the caring and friendly main female role who goes to her next door neighbors and brings them some home cooked food items. Her action of doing this shows how a stereotypical women should act. "She had once tried to make their acquaintance. She had gone to their backdoor with six fresh-baked buns and knocked several times."(44) From this quote, it can be concluded that Sarah is expected to be the sweet lady who cooks for her neighbors and makes friends. Being the nice lady who brings good over to her neighbors shows us exactly what a stereotypical female should do when new neighbors arrive. Then Emmett Heed shows the readers how a stereotypical male should act. He takes the first step by coming over and meeting the lady. By doing so, Emmett shows his masculinity. It shows that he has the guts to come over and introduce himself first to some women he has never met before. In the story when Sarah is talking to the Oriole Bird and telling it not to be scared of the Firecracker because there used to be so many around, it foreshadows how she is trying to tell her herself not to be scared to go over and meet Emmett her neighbor who just moved in just because she has experienced a bad situation with other people who have been her neighbors. Every time Emmett comes over, Sarah shows what female roles are suppose to be like. For example, she makes food in her kitchen and whenever he is over she always gives him some. It shows how women are suppose to be the cooks and be the person the men to depend on for their needs. When Emmett comes over he always is wearing a dirty shirt. She takes notice of that and asks him if he wants her to clean his clothes for him. Her actions show that stereotypical women are suppose to mother and clean things that are dirty. The male and female roles are specifically pointed out throughout this story by looking through the Gender Lens.

When I read through all the comment from the peer review, I revised a few things in this three hundred word paragraph. One thing that I changed was how I started my paragraph. I have a flow now when starting them, they aren't so awkward. In my first paragraph I don't say the lens I'm using I just point out which one I'm using with my thesis. Another thing I changed was analyzing my thoughts more, go into dept when I say things. Don't just do a quick thought of something, explain your thought. The last thing I changed around in my paragraph was I included a quote that connected what I analyzed and displayed it from the words in the short story.

Follis.Jordyn.SnowWhite.Blog5

Looking through the Gender lens, anyone who watches the Disney production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can see that Snow White is an example of what a female is. From the very start you can see exactly what a women should look like by her clothes, she is wearing a pretty little dress with a bow in her hair and she is wearing grown up lipstick. Through the cinematic techniques the audience notices how Snow White possesses the stereotypical characteristics a women should maintain. Snow White is caring, gentle, extremely nurturing, wants things clean, and wants to find a prince who will love her. Snow Whites soft voice shows how caring and gentle she is. Her voice is also at a stereotypical women's pitch. It isn't a low scratchy sound, it is a high suprano pitch. The lighting encompassing Snow White brings out the warm yellow color of her clothes to give the entire atmosphere a calm feel to it. From the beginning of the movie it shows how all the animals in the woods trust and like Snow White. They surround her whenever she is outside. For example when she is sitting on the ground scrubbing the steps with soapy water, birds land on all the tree branches around Snow White and sing along with her. A stereotypical women is supposed to be gentle and sweet to everything around her. The animals trust Snow White so much, when she gets caught in a horrible situation they lead her straight to the seven dwarfs home. The first thing Snow White notices when she takes a step into the little cottage is how dirty it is. The audience is shown this my how the camera is being tilted all over the house showing the dirty dishes and dusty shelves. Snow White automatically   starts cleaning the entire house. Her actions show how her character is identical of how a stereotypical women should act.

Follis.Jordyn.TheThird ManBlog.

The gender lens points out all the evil within the men and women that is shown throughout the movie "The Third Man". The scene that I noticed that showed how there is evil within men and women is when Holly Martens buys some flowers and brings them with him when he knocks on Anna Schimdts apartment door. When he comes the light is darker on him then it is on her. The lighting shows how he has a bad side to him. When he walks in most of the light is focused on the flowers which show exactly what they are meant to represent. Holly Martens thinks that Anna Schimdt is a whore when talking about the Madonna or Whore Theory. That Theory states that women are either a Madonna, a gentle care giver, or a Whore, a sextual creature. Holly Martens thinks that Anna Schimdt can just be won like a little stuffed animal at the county fair grounds. He tried to win her over by bringing her bright and fluffy flowers. Since Holly Martens thought Anna Schimdt was a Whore the flowers were suppose to be the easy way to get her with him. Also this scene brings out the evil and bad that is within Anna Schidmt. Holly Marten try's to win her over and forget about Harry lime with some bright and fluffy flowers. It doesn't work, she is the Whore he thinks she is. In the end though she is the oblivious stereotypical women. She knows how bad of a man Harry Lime is, but ignores the truth and still falls in love with him. Within this scene the camera shows how powerless Anna Schmidt is and how absent she is to the truth by putting a downward angle when she is viewed. Within this scene of the movie "The Third Man", the Gender Lens shows how men and women can be evil.

I really enjoyed all the Ted Talks and everybody did so well but I'm going to write this blog about Shaena's Ted Talk. I really enjoyed listening to her speech, she really caught my attention with what she was saying. Like at first in her introduction she drew me in to want to listen more about what she was saying, which is exactly what you want to do. Her delivery was very good! Her speaking was very smooth, it was the right speed and the perfect volume. I also really liked how she included her own personal experience with her poverty topic. She showed us lots of pictures which clicked my understanding better with what she was saying. The pictures she showed she compared what things were like here and what things are like in Kenya. They don't get electronics, vehicles, and toys like we do. She told us a story of how happy and a excited a middle age boy there was for getting a container of bubbles. If a middle age kid gets bubbles here, it's boring and not as excited. She showed with this little story how we aren't as appreciative for things then all the other people are for things they get. Here, we just expect it, there it is absolutely amazing to get anything to play with because there used to having to make or imagine there one toys and games. I really enjoyed hearing about her trip to Kenya and how poverty isn't always such a bad thing. Like we think we have it so bad here at times, but there they have it two hundred times worse and still are happy spirited. They never show through their personality or attitude how bad they really have it. The little things there mean the world to them, but aren't as meaningful here compared to them. It was really cool to here how she put the whole Ted Talk together. Her whole presentation was organized and easy to follow.

Follis.Jordyn. TedTalk

In my Ted Talk I want to have my Thesis be along the lines of how cancer effects the family dynamic. My goal of my Ted Talk is to inform people with information about cancer that you probably wouldn't know and show how the whole battle for my cousin started and then say how it affects the family.

The start of my Ted Talk would include the history and definition of cancer. I would also include all the different kinds of cancer, how it forms so they understand how it can happen to anybody, all the different things people can do to prevent It or limit themselves from it. I would show some visuals to make it easier to understand. I want to inform listeners about the treatments and give them some research on cancer coming back. I want to make sure people know how serious it can be and how cancer can affect people who didn't even know much information about the topic. I want to start slow and explain the basics about cancer so they know how it affects the people who battle this serious illness.

Next I want to share my family story. Have it be a narrative and take my listener to the moment that my cousin was in when she found out she had cancer. I want to go into more detail about the life of a cancer fighter. How each day for them is a battle. How one day it could be the best day of their lives to just sit around at home watching movies, and then another day they do the same exact thing and it just is a horrible say. Everything affects then differently day by day.  I want to talk about how much of a battle it is to get healthy again it is and how the survivors life changes forever, even though they beat this small battle, the overall battle isn't over.

And in conclusion my ted talk was to inform listeners about cancer and how serious it can impact the family dynamic.

This outline is pretty broad and unorganized, so any comments or suggestions would be great!

Follis.Jordyn.DEJ2.

One of the Ted Talks we watched in class was spoke by a guy named Mike Rowe. Within this speech Rowe used the quote "If I'm wrong about this, what else am i wrong about?" Throughout the quote above, the speaker is using sarcasm to show that he is wrong and he is in disbelief. The way he perceived castrating a lamb along many others, was wrong. Doing it the dirtier and harder way is better in this situation. This quote makes you think deeply about everything you do, even the smallest things. It also makes you ponder about if its the right way to do something in a certain situation, and how it affects all living things and the environment. This quote makes me connect with another Ted Talk we watched in class. The author gives an example how in Great Britain, 97% of the people have a Electric Tea Kettle. She interprets if all the people who have electric tea kettles wouldnt use them for one day, all that electricity would light up a town for an hour. Little things as not using a electric tea kettle can save that much electric and do so much for another town. What other little things can we do differently that makes a huge impact?

The Wife-Beater D.E.J.

As I was reading The Wife-Beater by Gayle Rosenwald Smith, the author really caught my attention with the unrealistic quote "Some articles quote women who felt the shirts looked great, especially on guys with great bodies. One woman stated that it even made guys look "manly." So manly equals violent?"(529). Throughout the quote above, Smith over emphasizes that manly equals violent with one women's opinion. Smith states just her opinion that has no actual proof behind it, no back up evidence, just what she believes is to be true. She dives in saying that women think a wife-beater is manly using only her opinion. What Smith was saying would have been more reasonably true if she would have used all other women's opinions instead of just one women's thoughts. By Smith doing this, it would have been more factual for the readers to believe. Smith influence the readers opinion by jumping to her conclusion and saying that, it makes the readers double think if everything else she has said is the truth or just her opinion. Smith is also trying to fluctuate the readers opinion so that they agree with her by incorrectly doing it. She should be using facts to argue it, and not using just her opinion. Smith also uses fallacies when trying to argue her point. This quote is an example of one, it is deceptive, misleading, and/or a false notion. Smith uses the opinion of what one women states, by her doing that is it suppose to be in say for all women? This quote is a type of fallacy called Personal Attack, or Argument Ad Hominem. This fallacy affects the validity of the argument by attacking the motives or character. By doing this it causes the readers attention to divert from the facts of an argument. Rather then focusing on the negative significance of the "Wife-Beater", the author slides the readers attention to her opinion.

Here are some ideas I have for my Ted talk:

1. Drug test welfare participates
-parents waste up welfare money instead of it going to the needs of their kids
-what happens to the kids if parents don't past the drug test?

2. Welfare in general
-what is welfare? Including definition and history about it
-why do we need it? Families at extremely low incomes need a helping hand with the needs of the family.

3. Paying students for good grades
-show research and see if it works
     - it would show how parenting affects students grades

My 6 year old cousin was diagnosed May 2013 with leukemia, so doing something about cancer would be meaningful to me, depending on how to do it

4. How cancer effects you and your family
     -life of a cancer fighter
-you have no idea you have it, of found quick, how curable it is
-how much of a battle it is
-how it changes your life forever

5. Cancer
-what is it including definition and history on it
     -all the different kinds
     - how it forms
     - how to prevent it
     -treatments
     -chances of getting it
     -chances of
     - does it come back

Those are my top 5 topics for my Ted Talk speech, if you would comment and let me know what you think about the topics and which one I should do? And any other directions I could go with a topic that would be great! Thanks!

There is a fallacy that is being used in the this quote "It is also true, however, that the children of abusers often learn the behavior from their elders." This fallacy is know as Red Herring. The author is shifting the readers attention from the negative connotation of the "Wife-Beater" to how children learn their actions from their parents. The main point was to show how atrocious the term "Wife-Beater" is, not to talk about how the way kids get parented can be how they turn out to be.

One fallacy in the essay "The Wife-Beater" is "Some articles quote women who felt the shirts looked great, especially on guys with great bodies. One woman stated that it even made guys look "manly." So manly equals violent?" This fallacy is the type called Personal Attack, or Argument Ad Hominem. This fallacy affects the validity of the argument by attacking the motives or character, this causes the readers attention to divert from the facts of an argument. Rather then focusing on the negative significance of the "Wife-Beater", the author slides the readers attention to her opinion.

The quote "Wearers under 25 do not seem to be disturbed by the name  " exhibits another category of fallacy. This type of fallacy is Hasty or Sweeping Generalization. The authors statement is biased and doesn't have evidence to back it up. The author generalizes that the younger generation does not see the negative outlook it causes because of it's title, "Wife-Beater". This generalization is invalid because the author didn't prove it accurately.
